GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation, is the practice of getting your brand named inside AI-generated answers, on ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini. SEO wins you a place on a results page. GEO wins you a mention in the answer itself, before the user ever sees a list of links.
Why GEO matters now
More and more buying research now starts with a question typed into an AI assistant rather than a search box. The user asks “what is the best furniture brand in Cairo” and receives a paragraph naming three companies. If you are not one of the three, you were not just ranked lower. You were never shown at all. There is no page two to be on.
GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
- The goal. SEO earns a ranking. GEO earns a citation inside the answer.
- The unit of competition. SEO competes per keyword. GEO competes per question.
- What wins. SEO rewards authority and links. GEO rewards clear, quotable, factual statements a model can lift.
- How you measure it. SEO uses rank and traffic. GEO means asking the assistants directly and recording whether you were named.
- The click. SEO assumes one. GEO often does not get one, and the mention still does the work.
They are not rivals. Most things that earn a citation also help your rankings. GEO is an extra layer, not a replacement.
How to optimise for AI search
1. Answer the question in the first two sentences
Language models lift passages that state an answer plainly and early. If your page buries the answer under 400 words of preamble, it will not be quoted. Lead with the answer, then explain it.
2. Write in questions people actually ask
Use real question phrasing as your headings. “What is a good ROAS?” gets cited. “Our approach to performance metrics” does not. AI answers are assembled from passages that match the question’s shape.
3. Publish facts only you have
Original numbers, your own case results, prices, timelines and specifics are what make a page worth citing. Generic advice is already everywhere and no model needs your version of it.
4. Make the claims self-contained
Every important sentence should make sense lifted out of the page on its own. “It improved by 40%” is useless out of context. “The campaign reached a 17.8 ROAS entirely from website conversions” survives the trip.
5. Use structure a machine can parse
Clear H2 and H3 headings, short paragraphs, real lists, comparison tables and an FAQ block. Add FAQ and Article schema so the structure is explicit rather than inferred.
6. Be consistent everywhere else
Models weigh what third parties say about you. Keep your business name, category and location identical across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and press. Contradictory information makes a model less confident about naming you.
7. Earn mentions, not just links
A plain-text mention in a roundup, a podcast description or an industry article carries weight for GEO even with no link attached. This is the biggest practical difference from classic link building.
How do you track whether GEO is working?
There is no rank tracker for this yet, so do it manually and consistently:
- Write down the 20 questions a buyer would actually ask before choosing you.
- Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
- Record whether you were named, and which competitors were.
- Repeat monthly and watch the share of answers you appear in.
- Watch referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics, which is small but growing and usually converts well.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Traditional search still sends the majority of traffic, and the pages that get cited in AI answers are usually pages that already rank. Treat GEO as the layer you add on top: same content discipline, written so a machine can quote it cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
What does GEO stand for in marketing?
Generative Engine Optimisation, optimising content to be cited inside AI-generated answers. It is not geographic targeting, which is a different use of the same abbreviation.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap. AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, is the older term covering featured snippets and voice answers. GEO refers specifically to generative AI assistants.
How long does GEO take to work?
Faster than SEO in most cases. Assistants re-crawl and re-index frequently, so a clearly written, well-structured page can start appearing in answers within weeks rather than months.
Do I need new content for GEO?
Usually not. Restructuring your best existing pages so they answer questions directly and state facts plainly is the cheapest first move.
